The development, implementation, and evaluation of a quality improvement initiative for high risk high cost patients with asthma.
Development of a QI Tool Kit for physicians in practice who serve high risk high cost patient populations.
The Asthma Control Test and Asthma Severity Among African-Americans in Urban, Rural and Suburban Georgia. As principal investigator of this study, Dr. Walker is examining the relationship between asthma severity among African Americans in Georgia and geographic location. The results of this study were presented at the 2006 National Medical Association Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas.
The National Medical Association PROJECT IMPACT Clinical Trials Training Program Follow Up Study. Dr. Walker is a principal investigator of a Clinical Trials Training Program Follow Up Study for the National Medical Association (NMA). The purpose of the study is to identify physician and practice characteristics that may influence minority physician and minority patient participation in clinical trials. Minority physicians, who participated in clinical trials training programs were surveyed regarding their experiences in clinical trials, access to clinical research coordinators, and attitudes regarding minority patient participation in clinical trials. The findings will be submitted to a peer review journal for publication. A next step will be to conduct small focus groups, which will allow us to collect updated, in- depth information on minority physician and patient participation in clinical trials.
Managed Care, Financial Incentives and Physician Practice. Funded by AHRQ, California Endowment and the Commonwealth Fund. Dr. Cheryl Lynn Walker is a principal investigator on a supplement examining the impact of managed care contracting on African American and Hispanic physicians and the patient populations they serve. Dr. Carol Simon (BU), is the principal investigator on the main grant. The study is a multi-institutional five-state study examining how physician, practice and patient characteristics may influence physician access to preferred provider panels and physician management of asthma, hypertension and depression.
The Hey Doc, I Need To Know Health Literacy Initiative. The initiative is designed to help people who suffer from chronic diseases improve their health outcomes.
The AHSI Healthcare Education for the Next Generation healthcare workforce development program. High school and undergraduate students are introduced to opportunities in healthcare. In addition to practical experience in medicine and dentistry, students are provided with information on the admissions process, financial aid, and pathways to healthcare careers.
